Bhagat Surdas ji

Seeing God with the Heart

Bhagat Surdas Ji was a great poet and devotee who is traditionally remembered as being blind. Although he could not see with his physical eyes, his heart was filled with love for the Divine.

According to a traditional sakhi, while travelling, Surdas Ji fell into a well and remained there for several days.

He prayed to God with complete faith.

It is said that lord appeared and helped him out of the well. Surdas Ji understood that the Divine had personally heard his prayer and protected him.

From that experience, his devotion became even deeper. He spent his life singing praises of God and expressing Divine love through poetry and music.

Though his physical eyes could not see, his inner vision was filled with the presence of God.

Message

True sight does not come only through the eyes.

When the heart is filled with devotion, we begin to see the Divine everywhere.
