Bhagat Beni Ji
Faith in the Midst of Poverty
Bhagat Beni Ji was a deeply spiritual person who had great love for God. He spent much of his time in prayer, meditation, and remembrance of the Divine.
His family was poor, and with very little income coming into the home, their financial condition became increasingly difficult. There were days when even basic household necessities and food became hard to arrange.
As his devotion grew stronger, Bhagat Beni Ji started spending more and more time in meditation. Gradually, he gave less attention to earning money and worldly responsibilities.
His wife became very worried.
She would ask him, “How will we run our home? How will we provide food for the family?”
Sometimes, seeing the poverty around her and Bhagat Beni Ji continuing to spend so much time in meditation, she would become furious and frustrated.
She could not understand how the family would survive if he did not go out and earn.
But Bhagat Beni Ji did not become angry with her.
Instead, the difficulties of life made him turn even more deeply toward God.
The more the worldly situation became difficult, the more he surrendered himself in meditation.
He prayed with complete faith and continued remembering the Divine.
When his wife asked where he spent his time, Bhagat Beni Ji would say that he was going to the King’s court.
His wife thought he meant the court of an earthly king and believed that perhaps one day he would return with some money or help.
But Bhagat Beni Ji was speaking about the court of the Supreme King — God.
Days passed.
The poverty became harder, his wife became increasingly worried, but Bhagat Beni Ji continued his meditation with even greater devotion.
His heart remained completely focused on God.
According to the traditional sakhi, seeing Bhagat Beni Ji’s sincere love, faith, and complete surrender, God became pleased with his devotion.
One day, while Bhagat Beni Ji was deeply absorbed in meditation, the Divine appeared before him.
God said to Bhagat Beni Ji:
“Beni, go back home. I will take care of your needs and fulfil what is required for your household. Continue to remember Me and use your life in the service of saints and holy people.”
Bhagat Beni Ji accepted the Divine command with humility.
When he returned home, he saw that his family had received the help and provisions they needed.
His wife was surprised and relieved. The same home that had been filled with worry and poverty was now blessed with support.
Bhagat Beni Ji understood that the Divine had protected the honour of His devotee.
But the blessing was not only for personal comfort.
Bhagat Beni Ji was also reminded to use whatever he received in a higher way — to serve saints, help others, and remain devoted to God.
His heart filled with gratitude.
The sakhi teaches us that Bhagat Beni Ji’s faith did not depend upon comfort or wealth.
Even during poverty, criticism, family worries, and hardship, his mind remained connected to the Divine.
