Bhagat Namdev ji
The Saint Who Rose Beyond All Boundaries
During the Bhakti period, there lived a great saint named Bhagat Namdev Ji Maharaj. From childhood, his parents gave him high spiritual values. Because of these values, Namdev Ji remained deeply connected to the devotion of God. Even while playing with other children, his mind remained absorbed in the remembrance of the Divine. As he grew older, he received worldly education, but his heart remained devoted to bhakti.
Singing in the Temple
Namdev Ji often visited temples and sang devotional songs in praise of God. Through his singing, he united people with the Divine. However, some Brahmins did not like this. Because of their narrow thinking, they repeatedly pushed him out of the temple. Namdev Ji loved listening to katha and kirtan in the temple, but when he was thrown out, he became sad and sat behind the temple.
There he sang a beautiful shabad:
“Jio jio Nama har gun uchre,
bhagat janan ko dehura phire.”
As he began singing the praises of God, a miracle happened. The temple itself turned toward the place where Namdev Ji was sitting. Today, that sacred place is known as Aundha Nagnath Temple, where Namdev Ji sang the praises of the Lord.
Spiritual Influence
Bhagat Namdev Ji continuously sang the praises of God. Through his pure spiritual fragrance, he used to create the entire environment sacred. He traveled throughout India spreading devotion and spiritual awareness. Wherever he went, people gathered around him to listen to his devotional songs. However, the rulers of that time did not like this influence. The Sultan had Namdev Ji arrested and placed in prison. The Sultan claimed that his Kapila cow had died and ordered Namdev Ji to bring the cow back to life. If he failed, he would not be released. Namdev Ji said
“Life and death are not in my hands. They are in the hands of God. I live only in the will of the Divine.”
Hearing this, the Sultan became even more angry and kept him imprisoned. Bhagats always stand with truth, while those who are unjust stand with falsehood. Namdev Ji stood firmly with truth.
The Sultan demanded that Namdev Ji stop saying “Ram Ram” and instead say “Allah Allah.” Namdev Ji’s mother was also present there. She said to him:
“My son, I have seen you say ‘Allah’ many times in devotion. Why do you not say it now and save yourself?”
Namdev Ji replied:
“Mother, when I say the name of Allah, I say it in love and devotion. But I cannot say it under pressure or force.”
God always supports the honor of His devotees. By divine grace, the dead cow came back to life. Seeing this miracle, the Sultan was astonished. His entire body began to tremble with fear and wonder. Realizing his mistake, he came to Namdev Ji, bowed at his feet, and asked for forgiveness.
Namdev Ji Explains How the Heart Connects to God
Later, Namdev Ji returned to Pandharpur. Devotees there asked him:
“How do you keep your heart connected with God at all times?”
Namdev Ji replied with these beautiful words:
“Sone ki sui, rupe ka dhaga,
Naame ka chit Har sau laga”
Explaining this, Giani Sant Singh Maskeen gives a beautiful example. When we want to join two bricks, we need cement. When we want to join two pieces of cloth, we need a needle and thread. Similarly, to connect the human heart with God, we need the Guru’s mantra with awareness. He explains it like this:
* The Guru’s mantra (Naam) is like a needle.
* Our attention (surat or dhyaan) is like the thread.
Legacy of Bhagat Kabir Ji
When the needle moves, the thread must move along with it. Only then does the cloth get stitched. In the same way, when we repeat Waheguru’s Name with deep attention, the heart becomes connected with the Divine.
Many people repeat God’s Name with their lips, but their attention is absent. It is like moving the needle without the thread—nothing gets stitched. But when Naam and attention move together, the human heart becomes united with the Divine.
Because the god is himself a supreme bliss, When the heart connects with the Divine.the mind becomes filled with joy and peace. Through this divine connection with God, a person experiences supreme bliss.
